Envisioning the Potential of a Fixer-Upper

Buying a fixer-upper is as much about imagination as it is about renovation. When we purchase a property that needs work, one of the first steps is being able to look past the current condition and envision what the home can become.

Seeing Beyond the Current Condition

Some homes make this process relatively simple. With straightforward architecture, it’s often easy to decide on an exterior color scheme and start planning improvements that bring the home back to life.

Other properties are a bit more complex. Certain homes—especially older ones—feature multiple exterior materials, unique wood details, and architectural elements that require more thoughtful planning. In those cases, we often bring in a professional designer to help guide the process.

Choosing the Right Colors

The right color palette can dramatically enhance a home’s character. A designer helps ensure the colors complement the architecture, highlight important details, and stay true to the style of the home.

This is particularly important with historic properties, where thoughtful design choices can help preserve the original character while still giving the home a refreshed look.

A Craftsman Home Reimagined

Below is a rendering our designer created for a historic Craftsman home in Los Angeles. The goal was to choose colors and finishes that showcase the craftsmanship and architectural beauty typical of this style.

In my opinion, the rendering does a wonderful job of highlighting what a classic Craftsman home should look like once it’s restored.
